This Greek revival home, commissioned by Thomas Gibbs and constructed by W. M. Barrett in 1862, is now the home of the Walker County Historical Commission. The home has housed generations of locally prominent families as well as female students attending Sam Houston Normal Institute. The bedroom walls of this historical home still bare the names of those students who lived there, and the museum is filled with antique furniture from 1860-1900’s. This hidden Huntsville treasure is a must visit historical site.

Lake Oolooteka at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum

Lake Oolooteka

On any given day, one may have to stop for the rare chicken who has wandered its way onto the road from the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. The grounds that the chickens call home rest on fifteen acres of the original 200-acre farm owned by General Sam Houston and his family between 1847 and 1858. Here, you can feed the ducks in Lake Oolooteka, an artificial Texas shaped pond honoring the adoptive Cherokee Indian father of Sam Houston. Meander over the footbridge to the Woodland Home and walk up the same steps that Sam Houston took more than a century ago. Nearby, walk to the single room log cabin that served as Houston’s study and law office. A short distance away, you can find the Steamboat House, the location of Houston’s death and funeral. Additionally on the grounds, you will find two period appropriate double-pen log cabins called Bear Bend and Guerran.Cabin.
